AEMET Issues Snow Warning for Madrid: 90% Probability in the City

Madrid, like many other parts of Spain, has been experiencing a series of fronts and storms in recent weeks, bringing abundant and persistent rainfall across the autonomous community. While some areas have seen brief respites, others have faced warnings for river overflow, such as the Jarama.

Strong winds have also been a factor, leading to the closure of parks like El Retiro last Thursday due to the risk of falling branches. Additionally, a large tree was toppled in the Atocha area, causing traffic disruptions.

Storm Marta Brings Snow and Rain

Many are hoping for a break in the unstable weather, but according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), this is not yet in sight. AEMET has announced the arrival of a new storm, named Marta, for this Saturday, February 7th. This storm is expected to bring continued precipitation to the Community of Madrid, with a yellow alert issued for snow in several areas.

Affected Areas and Snow Accumulation

Specifically, AEMET has indicated that the yellow alert for snow will be active during the central hours of Saturday, affecting both the Sierra de Madrid and the metropolitan area and Henares. The most significant accumulations are expected in the mountainous region, with up to 10 centimeters of snow above 1100 meters of altitude. Snowfall may also occur at lower elevations, between 800 and 900 meters.

For the Madrid metropolitan area, AEMET forecasts: “Snow accumulation in 24 hours: 2 cm. This accumulation may occur in the west and north. This warning has a low probability.” Residents are advised to stay updated on AEMET’s warnings, especially if planning to travel by car in the sierra area.

According to AEMET’s snow probability map for the Madrid region, there is a 90% chance of snowfall in Madrid city, in the center of the autonomous community, between 12:00 and 18:00 on Saturday.

During the same period, the probability increases to 95% in cities such as Alcorcón, Las Rozas, Alcobendas, and Brunete, while it reaches 100% in Colmenar Viejo, Cercedilla, El Escorial, Miraflores de la Sierra, Buitrago del Lozoya, and Rascafría.

Weekend Outlook: Snow, Rain, and Storms

By Sunday, the possibility of snowfall will be limited to the sierra areas. Although there is a yellow alert for snow in the metropolitan area, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are also forecast for most of the region throughout the weekend.

Residents are urged to exercise caution and stay informed about the latest weather updates from official sources.
