AP-7 Highway Closed After Two Trucks Collide and Ignite Near Barcelona
Santa Margarida i els Monjos, Barcelona, May 18 – The AP-7 highway was completely closed yesterday afternoon in Santa Margarida i els Monjos, Barcelona, following a collision between two trucks that subsequently caught fire. The incident, which occurred near Vilafranca del Penedès, led to significant traffic disruptions and the activation of the Transcat emergency plan. No injuries have been reported.
Collision Leads to Fiery Aftermath
The accident took place yesterday, May 18, at approximately 9:59 PM, as confirmed by the Servei Català de Trànsit. Initial reports suggest the collision was a side-swipe between the two heavy vehicles. One of the trucks was reportedly carrying aerosols, which resulted in several explosions during the fire and a large column of smoke visible from various points in the area.
Firefighters from the Generalitat deployed up to twelve units to control the blaze, which engulfed both vehicles. One of the trucks was completely incinerated. Emergency services are still working to fully extinguish the flames and remove the affected vehicles from the roadway.
Traffic Chaos and Diversions on the AP-7
The closure of the AP-7 highway in both directions caused extensive traffic jams, with retentions reaching up to four kilometers in each direction. The Mossos d’Esquadra implemented a diversion operation to manage the traffic flow and facilitate access for emergency teams. Authorities recommended that drivers use alternative routes such as the N-340 or the C-32 to bypass the affected area.
Transcat Plan Activated Due to Hazardous Materials
In response to the accident, Protecció Civil activated the special emergency plan for accidents involving the transport of dangerous goods by road and rail in Catalonia, known as Transcat. This protocol was triggered due to the presence of flammable materials in one of the involved vehicles and the risk posed by the explosions during the fire.
As of late yesterday evening, there was no information available regarding when the AP-7 highway would be reopened to traffic. Emergency crews continue their efforts to clear the scene and ensure safety.
The incident highlights the potential dangers associated with the transport of hazardous materials and the critical role of rapid emergency response in mitigating risks to public safety and infrastructure.
