Barcelona, May 22 – A significant step has been taken in the development of the new sports and municipal services complex in Magòria, a district bordering Hostafrancs and Font de la Guatlla. The architectural design competition for the project has been awarded to Landskrona. Construction is slated to commence in January 2028 and is expected to last approximately three years, with an initial budget of 36 million euros.

Project Awarded to SLP and Barceló Balanzó

The Barcelona City Council, through the municipal company BIMSA, with the support of the Urban Services Area and the Barcelona Sports Institute, and the collaboration of the Sants-Montjuïc District, has awarded the ideas competition to the joint project presented by SLP and Barceló Balanzó. These architects are scheduled to deliver the preliminary project next September and the executive project during the second half of 2027. They will also oversee the construction of the sports facilities and the two new underground operational centers for municipal Cleaning and Parks and Gardens services, totaling approximately 13,500 m2 of built area.

Green Spaces and Diverse Facilities

The project aims to extend existing open spaces from Gran Via to Corral Street and the Celestina Vigneaux gardens, while also highlighting the heritage elements of the old station building, a work by Domènech i Muntaner. A new central passage will serve as a shaded and social area, playing a crucial role as a climate refuge, offering environmental comfort, and becoming a meeting point for residents.

The full-size football pitch (11-a-side) with stands and associated services (approximately 8,000 m2 in total) will be located at a higher level. The municipal services will be situated underneath to ensure adequate heights for their use and minimize interference with future buildings. The Cleaning center will have an approximate area of 3,600 m2, and the Parks and Gardens workspace will cover about 900 m2. This complex will be constructed rapidly using prefabricated concrete structures, allowing for large, open interior spaces with maximum flexibility of use and no obstacles for vehicle maneuvering.

The pétanque area, featuring 12 covered courts with an approximate surface area of 1,700 m2, will be at an intermediate level, directly connected to the passage via shaded bleachers. A four-court pavilion (2,500 m2) and a 7-a-side football pitch (2,300 m2) will complete the complex. Their relative positioning seeks to minimize visual impact and further integrate the complex as a boulevard.

Municipal Cleaning and Parks and Gardens Services

The Cleaning center will be organized into three sections: a staff area, a vehicle parking area for the service, and a technical area for street cleaning, which includes a transfer plant, a workshop, and a washing facility for machinery and vehicles. These vehicles, mostly hybrid and electric, are responsible for daily street cleaning, maintaining the area around containers, and collecting waste bins. No other waste management will be carried out, apart from the transfer of street cleaning waste.

The Parks and Gardens workspace is an equipped facility where personal equipment and corresponding vehicles for the daily maintenance of Sants-Montjuïc parks and gardens are managed. It will serve around fifty workers and include parking for electric vehicles.

The project emphasizes a clear separation of access points based on use to prevent interference. The areas designated for Cleaning and Parks and Gardens will have independent pedestrian access from Corral Street and a shared direct vehicular access from Moianès Street.

The arrangement of these spaces and distances between buildings will facilitate integration with future developments, particularly with the planned socio-health and residential building.

An informative session on the project was held in the Saló de Plens yesterday, May 21, 2026.
