Humanes de Madrid, Community of Madrid, Spain – The Humanes de Madrid Town Council, through its Department for Women and Equality, has successfully concluded an extensive program of activities for International Women’s Day. The diverse program, aimed at all age groups, combined culture, education, leisure, and awareness-raising initiatives, all centered on the theme of equality.

Educational Initiatives Foster Early Awareness

The program commenced with educational activities designed to introduce the concept of equality to younger generations. Primary school students enjoyed the play “Iguales. La leyenda” (Equals. The Legend), a performance blending magic, clowning, and storytelling to impart values through participation and adventure. Secondary school students engaged in the theatrical dynamic “Profluencers, igualdad” (Profluencers, Equality), an educational show that humorously addressed key issues such as stereotypes, equality education, and social consciousness.

Performing Arts Take Center Stage

Performing arts played a prominent role throughout the program. Highlights included a dance for equality by the Federico García Lorca Municipal Dance School. The main commemorative event brought together residents for an afternoon featuring family theater, the awards ceremony for the “Magia para la igualdad” (Magic for Equality) drawing contest, and a dance performance.

Combining Culture, Leisure, and Reflection

The program also integrated cultural and leisure activities with spaces for reflection. These included a theater outing to see “Amigas de verdad” (True Friends), a play that prompts questioning honesty in personal relationships. A screening of the film “Wuthering Heights” attracted over 140 residents, followed by a discussion on themes such as intense love, jealousy, revenge, social inequalities, and the role of women in a rigid society, fostering a rich collective debate.

Enotourism and Cultural Visits Promote Equality

A particularly special event took place on March 8th: an enotourism activity focused on equality. A group of female residents visited Bodegas del Nero in Chinchón, where they learned about the wine-making process through a guided tour, enjoyed a tourist train ride through the municipality, and participated in a wine and cheese tasting, toasting to equality in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Further initiatives included the creative workshop “Sembrando sonrisas” (Sowing Smiles), promoting coexistence and shared learning, and a cultural visit to the Museum of America in Madrid. During this visit, the group explored an exhibition on the viceregal period, with a special focus on the role of women and their historical influence. The day concluded with a communal meal at a local restaurant, where residents could share their impressions.

Awareness Campaigns Address Gender Violence

The program also incorporated awareness-raising actions, such as a talk on the prevention of gender violence for students, reinforcing the commitment to education as a crucial tool for advancing towards a more egalitarian society.

A Moving Musical Tribute

The program concluded with an emotional tribute to María Jiménez, “Yo soy María” (I Am María), performed by Imperio Reina. This spectacle honored one of the most representative voices in Spanish music, allowing the audience to relive the essence of a brave and iconic artist through her most emblematic songs, in an evening filled with emotion, strength, and vindication.

Positive Reception and Continued Commitment

The Department for Women and Equality has expressed great satisfaction with the participation and reception of all activities, which allowed for the commemoration of March 8th from a diverse, inclusive, and participatory perspective. Through this program, the Humanes de Madrid Town Council reaffirms its commitment to genuine equality between women and men, advocating for initiatives that promote awareness, education, and active citizen involvement.
