Barcelona, Catalonia, April 7, 2026 – A significant step has been taken in the preparations for Barcelona 2026, World Capital of Architecture, with the establishment of an inter-administrative commission. This commission, formed through an agreement between the State administration, the Generalitat of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council, and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, will be responsible for developing the plans and programs related to this event of “exceptional public interest.” The Generalitat approved the signing of the agreement for the commission’s creation yesterday.
Extensive Program of 1,500 Activities Planned
Throughout 2026, Barcelona is set to host an extensive multidisciplinary program comprising 1,500 activities. These events will be spread across all ten districts of Barcelona and will also extend to other parts of Catalonia, aiming to engage a broad audience.
The primary objective of these initiatives is to “disseminate the values and transformative capacity of architecture, promote the city’s historical and contemporary heritage, and highlight the potential of Catalan architecture.”
UNESCO and UIA Recognition
The designation of Barcelona as the World Capital of Architecture is a prestigious recognition spearheaded by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA). This honor is intrinsically linked to Barcelona’s role as the host city for the World Congress of Architects 2026.
World Congress and Capital City Events
The World Congress of Architects 2026 is scheduled to take place in Barcelona from June 28 to July 2. The activities for the World Capital of Architecture, however, commenced earlier, on February 12, and are slated to continue until December 13, ensuring a year-long celebration of architectural innovation and heritage.
The creation of this commission underscores the commitment of various administrative bodies to ensure the success and widespread impact of Barcelona 2026, solidifying the city’s position on the global architectural stage.
