Madrid Unveils Pope Leo XIV’s Visit Details: Museums and Churches to Open at Night

The Archdiocese of Madrid has revealed new details regarding Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit to the capital, scheduled from June 6 to 9, 2026. The announcement highlights an intense program for the night of Saturday, June 6, which will transform Madrid into a hub of spirituality, dialogue, and culture with the exceptional opening of temples in the city center and over twenty museums and art spaces.

Three Phases for the Vigil in Plaza de Lima

Laura Moreno, the pastoral director of the trip, explained that the vigil in Plaza de Lima, a central event for Saturday, will be structured into three distinct moments to facilitate engagement with young people. The day will commence with a musical block featuring groups such as Hakuna and Siloé.

This initial phase will be followed by an informal and direct dialogue between Robert Prevost and young people and adolescents. Finally, the gathering will conclude with a third moment dedicated to prayer and contemplation before the official close of the day.

As a notable new feature, Moreno announced that after the vigil, “museums will open, as will churches,” allowing for a spiritual and cultural “white night” experience across the city.

Niña Pastori to Bring “Color” to the Most Vulnerable

The social dimension of the visit has also added prominent names. On Saturday, June 6, at 6:00 PM, Leo XIV will visit the CEDIA 24-hour Cáritas Madrid center in the Carabanchel neighborhood to meet with homeless individuals.

Moreno confirmed that artist Niña Pastori will generously perform at the end of this encounter to add “color” to an event focused on the most vulnerable. This gesture reinforces the organization’s message about the importance of the “last.” Bishop Vicente Martín, auxiliary bishop of Madrid, emphasized that the Pope “opens the trip with the impoverished and will close it with the most abandoned.” According to Martín, the Pontiff’s presence among them aims for society to learn to “look at reality through the eyes of the impoverished.”

A Journey to “Look Higher”

Cardinal José Cobo stressed that this entire mobilization, which involves “the entire diocesan fabric,” seeks to give the event “soul” and not just be a “fireworks display.”

“We want the Pope to come to help us look higher,” affirmed the archbishop, insisting that the Pope’s message from Madrid will be launched to the whole world. For his part, the technical director of the trip, Yago de la Cierva, thanked the collaboration of administrations and companies, noting that, although capacities are expected to be exceeded, the spirit of community “will leave its mark” on the city.

The agenda will continue in the following days with Mass in Cibeles, the ‘Weaving Networks’ event at the Movistar Arena, and a large gathering of those who animate the dioceses of Madrid, Getafe, and Alcalá at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.

Madrid Embraces the Pope: 50,000 Beds and 18,000 Volunteers

Madrid will provide 50,000 beds in schools, sports centers, and parishes to accommodate young people traveling from all over Spain. One of the logistical novelties is that many participants will sleep outdoors along Paseo de la Castellana to attend the massive festival of faith.

More than eighteen thousand volunteers will be responsible for coordinating events and welcoming the Pontiff at Barajas Airport. They will accompany him on his journey in the Popemobile to the Royal Palace. The Pope will conclude his stay in Madrid with a special meeting at the IFEMA venue to personally thank the generous dedication of the volunteers during his visit to the capital.
