Montjuïc Interpretation Center Reopens with Expanded Historical Exhibition

Barcelona, April 24 – The new Montjuïc Interpretation Center (CIM), located in the Parade Ground of Montjuïc Castle, has officially reopened to the public. Following a comprehensive renovation and exhibition redesign, the center now features an expanded journey through six rooms, detailing the castle’s pivotal role in Barcelona’s history. The exhibition covers a period from the repression of 19th-century anarchist movements to the castle’s transformation into a public facility.

A More Complete, Clear, and Dynamic Experience

The Montjuïc Interpretation Center closed in November 2025 for extensive renovations aimed at enhancing the exhibition and revitalizing the space, with a particular focus on reinforcing the historical narrative of the site. The new museography, which opened its doors on Sunday, April 26, combines a rich array of documentation, audiovisual presentations, photographs, and original artifacts to deliver a more complete, clear, and dynamic visitor experience.

A key feature of the new exhibition is the preservation of a section of the 17th-century bastion in the final room of the tour. This architectural element is crucial for understanding how the fortress has been constructed and transformed throughout its long history, offering tangible insight into its evolution.

Exploring Montjuïc’s Historical Significance

The expanded exhibition delves into various periods of Montjuïc Castle’s past, shedding light on its military, political, and social functions. Visitors will learn about the castle’s strategic importance in defending Barcelona, its role as a prison, and its complex relationship with the city’s political and social movements. The interpretive journey aims to provide a deeper understanding of the castle’s multifaceted legacy.

Enhancements for an Engaging Visit

The renovation project focused on creating an engaging and accessible experience for all visitors. The integration of modern audiovisual technology allows for immersive storytelling, bringing historical events and figures to life. Carefully curated photographs and original objects offer authentic glimpses into the past, fostering a stronger connection between visitors and the castle’s heritage.

Future of Montjuïc Castle as a Public Space

The reopening of the Montjuïc Interpretation Center underscores the ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting Montjuïc Castle as a significant cultural and historical landmark for Barcelona. Its transformation into a public facility, after centuries of military use, symbolizes a new chapter for the site, inviting residents and tourists alike to explore its rich history and enjoy its panoramic views of the city.

The center aims to serve as an educational hub, encouraging reflection on Barcelona’s past and its enduring impact on the present. By offering a comprehensive and engaging historical narrative, the CIM contributes to the broader understanding of the city’s identity and its journey through time.
