Two Climbers Critically Injured in Montserrat Rockfall Incident

Barcelona, April 11, 2026 – A man and a woman, both aged 30, are in critical condition after suffering an accident while climbing on Saturday afternoon in the Montserrat mountain range, specifically in El Bruc (Barcelona). According to the Bombers de la Generalitat, the incident was caused by a rockfall as they ascended the mountain face in an area known as El Columpio.

Following initial on-site medical assistance from the Emergency Medical System (SEM), both individuals were evacuated by helicopter to Bellvitge and La Vall d’Hebron hospitals.

Emergency Response and Rescue Operation

The Bombers de la Generalitat received the alert about the accident at 4:30 PM, when a person reported two unconscious climbers in a climbing area near the Can Jorba car park. Given the severity of the situation, SEM personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on one of the injured, while stabilizing the second, who presented “significant injuries.”

The rescue operation involved multiple emergency teams, including specialist mountain rescue units from the Bombers de la Generalitat. The rapid deployment of a rescue helicopter was crucial for the swift evacuation of the critically injured climbers to specialized medical facilities.

Details of the Incident and Injuries

The climbers were reportedly ascending the El Columpio section of the Montserrat mountain when the rockfall occurred. This area is known for its challenging climbing routes and natural formations. The exact circumstances leading to the rockfall are currently under investigation. Both individuals sustained severe trauma, leading to their critical condition upon arrival at the hospitals.

The incident highlights the inherent risks associated with mountain climbing, even in popular and well-known areas like Montserrat. Emergency services continuously emphasize the importance of safety precautions, proper equipment, and awareness of environmental conditions for climbers.

Ongoing Investigation and Safety Reminders

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the precise cause of the rockfall and to evaluate any contributing factors. This will include assessing the geological stability of the area and reviewing witness accounts.

The Bombers de la Generalitat and SEM have reiterated their commitment to responding to mountain emergencies, while also urging climbers to exercise extreme caution. They advise checking weather conditions, informing others of planned routes, and being prepared for unforeseen circumstances when undertaking climbing activities.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers in outdoor sports and the vital role played by emergency response teams in ensuring public safety in challenging environments.
