Madrid, May 22, 2026 – The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, today inaugurated two new Data Processing Centers (DPCs) belonging to the technology company Equinix in Alcobendas. During the event, Díaz Ayuso emphasized that “Madrid once again demonstrates that it is the place where everyone wants to be and where digitalization is at the service of companies and people.”
Madrid: A Leading Digital Hub
The inauguration follows a meeting last year between Díaz Ayuso and executives from the American company in New York, which resulted in a new investment commitment of 460 million euros in the region. This significant investment underscores Madrid’s growing importance in the global technology landscape.
Díaz Ayuso highlighted that the Community of Madrid has become “the technological hub of Southern Europe,” leading the installation of DPCs in Spain. Currently, there are 40 DPCs in operation, with an additional 15 under construction. Furthermore, a future investment portfolio includes over 40 more DPCs, which will collectively add more than 3,100 megawatts of power. “Our Government is aware that data is as strategic as highways, ports, or energy once were,” she added.
Strategic Importance of Data Processing Centers
The President reiterated Madrid’s readiness to spearhead the digital era in Europe, stating, “The Community of Madrid is prepared to be the driving force of the digital era in Europe.” She also cautioned against complacency and excessive regulation, asserting the need “not to fall asleep in self-absorption or regulations” to avoid “blocking the path of thinking minds and experience.”
Equinix’s Expansion in Alcobendas
The two new Equinix DPCs in Alcobendas are part of this broader investment strategy, reinforcing the region’s infrastructure for digital services. These centers are crucial for supporting the increasing demand for data storage, processing, and connectivity, which are essential for various industries and public services.
Economic Impact and Future Outlook
The continuous growth in the number of DPCs and the substantial investments in the sector are expected to generate significant economic benefits for the Community of Madrid. These include job creation, attracting further foreign investment, and enhancing the region’s competitiveness in the digital economy. The focus on digitalization aligns with the government’s vision of a modern and technologically advanced Madrid.
The Community of Madrid’s proactive approach to fostering a favorable environment for technological development, coupled with its strategic location, makes it an attractive destination for global technology companies. This commitment to digital infrastructure is vital for sustained economic growth and innovation in the region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by various government officials and industry leaders, all emphasizing the transformative potential of these new facilities for Madrid’s digital future.
